On April 20, 2022 history moved forward again on the long path that began August 21, 1871, when Treaty 2 was agreed too. This time it happened in Dauphin, Treaty 2 Territory, at the draft for the Under 21 Hockey Challenge. Four teams, carrying the four directions, the four colours, and the four sacred clans of Anishinaabe culture, sat down to build their rosters for a tournament that will bring young players and communities together under one roof. It was a proud and grounded moment, one that showed how sport can carry culture forward while giving young hockey talent a stage to shine.
Boh Kubrakovich-Kiniw and Craig Beaulieu, Event Organizer stood together as Team Kiniw made its first pick, a milestone that will stay with everyone in that room. The draft was more than a hockey event. It was a living expression of identity, resilience, and pride, rooted in the same spirit that has guided Anishinaabe, Cree and Dakota people in the territory since the treaty was made over a century and a half ago. As the four teams walked away with their new rosters, the excitement pointed to something bigger than the game itself: a territory and its nations reclaiming its space, celebrating its youth, and building toward a tournament that will be remembered for years to come.
